How green is your bathroom?

No, we’re not asking whether you have mould in the bottom of the shower (do you!?), but whether your bathroom is eco-friendly.

Your bathroom should be a stress-free space and by making it greener (we don’t mean a new paint job!) you can relax in the knowledge you’re reducing your bills and also helping the planet while sprucing up your digs. Go you!

Let’s start with the things in your bathroom.

The dunny

Leaking toilets and dripping taps are not only super annoying but they are a major waste of water, so take action to get them fixed.

If you don’t already have a dual flush on your toilet this simple change can save literally hundreds of litres of water. Also, why not pop a little note on the back of the toilet door to remind your household that ‘if it’s yellow, let it mellow—if it’s brown flush it down’.

So long as you haven’t got a fancy toilet where the water tank is in the wall out of sight, pop a plastic bottle full of water in the tank. This stops the tank from filling up fully.

Shower (less) power

Skip the bath in favour of the shower. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? That’s because it is. Baths rack up way more water than an average shower and if you have a lukewarm shower (much better for your skin), you can save money on your energy bill too. Gotta love a double whammy!

How’s your shower head? Does it pump out water like the Grand Canyon? No one likes the feeling of water-waste guilt so switch to a low-flow shower head. If you do your research you should be able to find a water-efficient head that offers just as good a shower experience as a high-flow device.

Light bulbs

Light bulb moment….flick your lights. Just like you have in your kitchen and living room, swap your light bulbs to energy saving ones. They might cost a bit more upfront but they’ll save you money in the long run.

Now let’s look at what you do in your bathroom. (Don’t be afraid!)

Stop wasting water

Truth time - do you leave the tap running while you clean your teeth? Turn the tap off while you scrub. Turn the tap on to rinse. Easy!

Recycle

What are you using to wipe? Recycled toilet paper has come a long way since our school days. Now it can be just as soft as regular dunny paper but better for the planet. Try to cut down on the number of sheets you use too!

See what else you can recycle too.Woohoo Deodorant Paste tins are 100% recyclable and reusable—you can use them to store bobby pins, bits of LEGO you find down your toilet (Mum’s will get the gist), cotton wool balls and a whole bunch of other fun stuff.

Eco-friendly bath products

When it comes to bathroom products, we all have our favourite shampoos, body washes, super soft and cuddly towels…but it’s time to focus on going green and making some changes Mother nature would be proud of.

A bunch of the skin, body and beauty products we use are packed with synthetic ingredients, harsh detergents and toxins that are not that good for you OR the planet. But the great thing is, you have a choice.

Consider switching to organic bamboo (or cotton) towels and personal care products that use natural and organic ingredients too.

With your personal care products it’s good to get into the habit of reading the labels before you buy and choosing products that are natural, cruelty-free, locally made, and with environmentally friendly packaging.

(Just like our all natural Woohoo Deodorant Sticks in their eco-friendly cardboard tubes!)
